Inner Tube Water Polo could be coming to Meadow Lake

Feb 4, 2016 | 11:27 AM

A new physical activity could be starting in Meadow Lake if enough people express interest.

Desiree Lalonde, a fitness enthusiast, is trying to get an inner tube water polo league started in Meadow Lake.

“I played inner tube water polo in university and loved it. I recently moved back to Meadow Lake and wanted to continue playing it,” Lalonde said.

Inner tube water polo differs from regular water polo in that it’s easier and not as aggressive. It’s an exercise people of all fitness levels can participate in; Lalonde suggests being over the age of 14 to sign up.

“Sometimes it can be quite competitive and you need to push some people around which could be exhausting. Other times it can be a little more relaxed, just floating on your tube, maybe paddling here and there,” Lalonde said, while explaining the game flow.

“If you’re not a comfortable swimmer, it’s a great way to get comfortable in the water. Sometimes you’ll fall out of your tube but you can always hold on to it, swim to the edge and get back on.”

Lalonde is still in the process of gathering interested names and ordering the tubes before setting a start date. If the season were to start, games would be played on Saturdays with a low cost of $5.50 per game.

“I would recommend it a lot for high school students and people who are older. It’s a little intimidating – going to the pool for the first time, so if you want to start swimming or are looking into doing a water activity this (inner tube water polo) is a really good one to start with just because it is so simple,” she said.

“You can familiarize yourself with the pool, you can make friends and it’s a great way to get out of the house to beat those winter blues,” Lalonde added.

To express interest in playing inner tube water polo, sign-up and information sheets are available at the Meadow Lake Aquatic Center.
