Broncos Advance to Second Round

Feb 10, 2016 | 8:04 AM

The Meadow Lake Broncos senior hockey team carried their regular season winning-ways over to the playoffs.

They swept the Moosomin Warriors in the first round of the Beaver Lakes Hockey League playoffs.

Darren Caron, the leading scorer from the regular season, said Moosomin came short-benched and they used the series to work on team skills in preparation for their next opponent, the La Ronge 89ers.

“They’re a decent team, they got some good players. We handled them fairly easy during the season, lost one to them at the beginning of the year, but our team got better and we picked up a few more guys, (I feel) they will be a challenge but I’m not too worried about it,” Caron said.

Due to technicality rules, the Broncos got the victory from that loss to the 89ers.

Throughout the regular season, Meadow Lake and La Ronge met four times, with the Broncos winning all the games.

The Broncos roster includes former junior players and even retired NHL enforcer, DJ King who played in 118 pro games while accumulating 11 points and 215 penalty minutes with the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals.

“We got three lines that can score on any given shift and adding DJ King and Zane Morin makes us pretty strong,” Caron said.

After the first round, the Broncos are led in scoring by Ashton Mcintyre who has 10 points in two games. Spencer Pethle has eight points while Caron has six.

Round two in the BLHL kicks off on Fri. Feb. 12 for the Broncos. They will welcome the La Rong 89ers to PineRidge Ford Place on the Flying Dust First Nation for game one.

Puck drop is at 8:00 p.m.
