Snow clearing department expected to save money

Feb 10, 2016 | 11:27 AM

If the warm winter weather and lack of snowfall continues, the City of Meadow Lake will end up saving money from their snow clearing budget.

Meadow Lake has not had to pay as much this season in fuel and labour hours compared to past years due to the lack of snow.

“We’re spreading a little bit more gravel and that because of the slippery surfaces on the road but if it keeps up like this we should have a significant saving by the end of spring,” Richard Levesque, Meadow Lake interim city manager, said.

Levesque added any money saved from the snow clearing budget would likely be put into reserves for use in future years.

“(Compared to most communities) we are one of the few that attempt to do all of our residential streets and we also do a lot of side walk clearing where in other cities it would be the responsibility of the home owners,” Levesque said.

The city is responsible for snow clearing within the city and any section of highway that falls within their boundary.

There is no snow on the radar from Feb. 8 to Feb. 12. However, 14 centimetres are expected to fall between Feb. 12 and Feb. 19.
