Dorintosh and Rapid View Schools will remain open

Feb 12, 2016 | 12:16 PM

Recently the schools in Dorintosh and Rapid View came under review by the North West School Division and a decision was made to not close the two facilities.

“The number one reason would be enrollment, if a (Kindergarten to Grade 8) school falls under the 51 pupil number the school can be placed under review,” Director of Education Duane Hauk said.

In Dorintosh, there are approximately 25 students enrolled for the 2015 and 2016 school year while Rapid View has roughly 42.

Committees representing Dorintosh Central School and Green Acre School in Rapid View made presentations to the Board of Education during their January meeting outlining plans for student growth and community development.

“In both of the communities, they were able to show they will have an enrollment growth in the next couple of years and that was probably the biggest factor,” Hauk said.

“Another factor – places are looking at the development of daycare within their communities,” he added.

Committees were comprised from the areas’ respective RM council members, community figures and school officials.

Other factors the board and review committees looked at while considering closing the school included the buildings structural capabilities and condition. Transportation, and operational cost per student were another two other aspects the committee weighed during their process.

“The review committees were very co-operative and did an excellent job. They worked very well with the board,” Hauk said.

Hauk added the schools will not be subject to future reviews if they remain above the 51 student mark.
