Kinsmen Club to host fundraisers leading up to Teremiracle

Feb 17, 2016 | 8:12 AM

The Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club is hosting a number of fundraisers leading up to its Mar. 5 and 6 Telemiracle telethon.

On Friday, Feb. 19 the Kinsmen Club will host a wing night at 5 p.m. in the Meadow Lake Legion.

“There are no tickets, all you do is show up, pay five bucks and get a dozen wings,” Vice-President of the Kinsmen Club Joey Alkestrup said.

To alleviate any confusion regarding tabs at the Legion, Alkestrup asked everyone attending to bring cash.

A steak night is set for Thursday, Mar. 3, also at the Legion. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased by contacting Sheri at the RBC bank in Meadow Lake or by texting Joey Alkestrup at 306-240-6589.

At both of the events a 50/50 draw will make its rounds and Alkestrup said the Legions’ arm may be twisted to allow karaoke for the evening.

The Kinsmen Club will also hold is taco-in-a-bag dinner Mar. 5, the first night of Telemiracle.

Besides food fundraisers the Club also hosts their own Telemiracle with live entertainment, a magician and face painting for kids, concessions, and possibly haircut or massage areas set up for the weekend.

Meadow Lake’s Telemiracle runs for 21 hours with live radio coverage and, new this year, television coverage as well.

Once the festivities are done and the donations tallied, a call gets placed to the Saskatchewan Telemiracle in Regina with their final number.

Generally Meadow Lake raises between $40,000 to $42,000 with a large percentage coming back in to the community.

“We’ve got money in the past couple years for wheel chair accessible playgrounds, multi-work spots, and direct funding from Telemiracle,” Alkestrup said.

“It all comes back into the community one way or another,” he added.

This year, the Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club is aiming to raise $50,000 in donation dollars.

Telemiracle kicks off in the Meadow Lake Civic Centre on Mar. 5 at 8 p.m. and runs right through to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 6.

Admission to Telemiracle is free, donations are gratefully accepted.
