Saskatoon nabs record for world’s largest snowball fight

Mar 31, 2016 | 2:13 PM

It‘s snow joke – Saskatoon is officially a world record holder.

The city is now featured in the Guinness Book of World Records because of a bunch of snowballs.

On January 31, Victoria Park was packed with close to 20,000 people in an effort to knock off Seattle for the world’s largest snowball fight.

A couple months later, Guinness has verified 7,681 people took part in the challenge.

Seattle’s number was 5,834.

“It was just like a sea of people and a sea of snowballs,” organizer and Canadian snowball fight team captain Nathan Thoen told CKOM on Jan. 31.

The assault in Victoria Park lasted only a minute and a large portion of it was focused on Thoen and comedian Rick Mercer, who stood atop a mound of snow.

The snowball fight was organized by tourism groups in Saskatoon along with members of Canada’s snowball fighting team.

The challenge closed out the nine-day PotashCorp Wintershines Festival.
