CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign back for another year

Apr 7, 2016 | 11:58 AM

It’s time once again for CAA Saskatchewan’s Worst Road Campaign.

Every spring CAA collects votes from Saskatchewan residents as to which road in the province is the worst.

Voting will take place from April 8 to 29 through CAA Saskatchewan’s website with the Top 10 Worst Roads being announced on May 2.

When it comes to what constitutes the “worst road” title, CAA clarifies those as roads with potholes, cracks, crumbling pavement, in disrepair, have poor signage or road markings and have traffic congestion.

Photos of these roads will also be accepted by CAA but they ask that motorists only take photos of these roads when it’s safe to do so.

Throughout the voting phase CAA will keep their website up-to-date with which roads have cracked the top 10.

Along with the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association, the Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation have both joined CAA Saskatchewan in this year’s campaign.

The two groups will be able to share insights into road composition and conditions.

They will also be able to share knowledge of the road building industry.

The Worst Roads Campaign is a way for residents to help identify where repairs need to be made.

In the 2015 campaign, 4,556 votes were cast with Highway 354 near Dilke voted as the number one worst road in the province.

The top ten list for 2015:

1. Highway 354 by Dilke
2. Highway 4 by Val Marie
3. Highway 322 by Silton
4. Highway 36 by Coronach
5. Highway 220 by Bulyea
6. Highway 43 by Gravelbourg
7. Highway 47 by Springside
8. Highway 27 by Vonda
9. Highway 18 by Fife Lake
10. Highway 155 by La Loche

In the 2014 campaign there were 4,651 votes cast, in 2013 there were 2,800 votes and in 2012 there were 2,900 votes cast.

CAA Saskatchewan said in a release that this campaign “helps to put a spotlight on troublesome and even dangerous road conditions in the province and is one tool to help address these roads in most need of attention.”
