Apr 11, 2016 | 12:51 PM

The Meadow Lake Under 14 volleyball club brought home gold after a successful weekend in the Battlefords.

According to Meadow Lake Heat head coach Trent Marsh, the team started off strong, defeating Muenster in two straight sets. They then fell to Swift Current in their second game.

They lost the first set of their game against Mossbank. Marsh said the loss seemed to “wake the boys up as we were dominant in the second (set), winning the game.”

They finished a busy Saturday with straight set wins over the Battleford volleyball club and the Saskatoon Twisters.

The Heat wrapped up the round robin with a win against Saskatoon JCVC, putting them in second place heading into playoffs.

It was a rematch against the Saskatoon Twisters in the quarter-finals and against Saskatoon JCVC in the semi-finals.

Their semi-final match saw the Heat start on unsteady ground, at one point down 15-7 in the first set. They rallied back to win their first set 25-22. After losing the second set 25-21, strong serving and good defence took the Heat to the win, advancing them to the finals against Muenster.

Strong serving and good defence allowed the Heat to defeat Saskatoon JCVC 15-9, advancing them to the finals against Muenster.

The Heat were crowned tournament champions after a straight set victory against Muenster.

Marsh said he saw lots of growth from his players, and his experienced players step up during play.

The Heat’s next tournament is the Conexus Provincial Championship from April 22-24.
