Both accused thief and property owner charged by RCMP

Meadow Lake RCMP are using what happened during a recent arrest as a chance to promote the safe storage of firearms.

In the early morning of April 10, RCMP responded to a complaint of a suspicious individual being in backyards and trying to get into vehicles.

RCMP tracked down the suspect and found him going through a vehicle. A foot pursuit followed, and allegedly the suspect threw a knife at an office.

As a result, 18-year-old Michael McCallum has been charged with eight criminal offences, including resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and assault on a police officer with a weapon.

During their investigation, RCMP officers also uncovered a rifle and ammunition in the back seat of a vehicle.

The owner of the firearm was charged with careless storage of a firearm.

RCMP Corporal Ryan How said the RCMP wants to make sure the public knows leaving firearms open in a car only encourages thieves.

He added the RCMP hopes the incident would encourage common sense and prevention.
