Meadow Lake’s Door of Hope “grateful” for community support

Apr 15, 2016 | 1:12 PM

A Meadow Lake charity’s doors remain open and its executive director said it’s because of the support of very generous volunteers.

Unita Esau said the helping hands really “make our day.”

“For us as a staff, (people donating time) means someone is sharing our workload. And they’re sharing it because they believe in what we do,” Esau said.

During the Easter break, staff and students from Pierceland School donated their time by re-organizing the food bank’s storage room; a project which took nearly a full day. Staff from the local RBC bank donated an evening to work with the charity sorting canned goods.

A restaurant and catering company in Goodsoil also brought a hot meal for staff, volunteers and anyone looking for an Easter dinner.

“Every time we have someone from the community come and give back in whatever way they can it makes us feel very grateful in the sense we are indeed a community together,” she added.

A fundraiser was held at the Eatery on Main which raised just over $625. Meadow Lake’s Buy and Sell Facebook used is canned food as currency which was then donated to the charity.

“We really appreciate everyone who volunteers, even if it’s by donating items to us that we can sell or use or by donating their time or money,” Esau added.

The Door of Hope has operated in Meadow Lake for 25 years. The charity offers a hot daily meal, as well as operates a food bank, thrift store and low-income apartment building.
