P.A. reporter blocked from Beardy’s court room

Apr 20, 2016 | 1:02 PM

A Prince Albert reporter with paNOW was briefly barred from a band court room during preliminary hearing for an alleged sex offender.

Community members from the Beardy’s and Okemasis Willow Cree First Nation attempted to stop Spencer Sterritt from entering the court room, saying to the reporter the proceedings were a reservation matter and he didn’t belong there.

According to Saskatchewan Courts, all court rooms, regardless of location, are open and public.

Twenty-four-year-old George Gamble is facing a number of sex related charges involving minors. He did not appear for his court hearing this morning.

Gamble was a former employee of the Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School, fired from his duties after being charged by RCMP.

Gamble’s lawyer, John Kwok, told the court his client has the mental state of an adolescent and this could be an issue for the proceedings.

The case has been adjourned until May 4.

RCMP have not commented on when the alleged acts took place or how old the victims were.
