After winning every tournament they entered this season, the Meadow Lake Heat 14 and under volleyball club added to their trophy count by winning the Conexus Provincial Championship held April 22 to 24 in Saskatoon.

The team played and won three games previous to their match on Saturday, April 23 against the Regina Volleyball Club Hams.

“It was probably the best match we played all tournament. The defence of both teams and our passing was almost perfect. We lost the first set 24-26 and then won the second 25-20,” head coach Trent Marsh said, adding the third set was back and forth and ended in a 15-13 victory.

Playoff Sunday saw the Heat in action against Muenster. Marsh said the first set was handily won 25-17 but passing troubles put the team down early in the second set, a margin they couldn’t come back from losing 15-25.

“The third set, we started slow and were down seven nothing. The amazing thing about our team though is that there was no panic in the boys, they went out and got to work and we ended up winning 15-13 putting us in the semi-finals,” Marsh said.

In the semis, the Heat faced the Emerald Park Wildcats. Once again, the Heat got off to a slow start dropping the first set 18-25. The team seemed to wake up, however, in the second where they won 25-17. Winning the third set gave the boys a spot in the finals.

The Heat played the Swift Current Junior Sundogs in the final in a close three-set match. The first set saw the team play scared resulting in a 17-25 loss. Meadow Lake rebounded in the second, winning 25-20. The third set was back and forth the entire time with the excitement ending in a 15-13 win for the Heat.

“The boys were pretty excited (about winning provincials) and I am very proud of them. We saw some of our big players emerge in the big moments,” Marsh said.

The Heat’s next tournament will be the National Championships held in Winnipeg in May.
