M.L. White Sox hope to build on a successful last season

May 6, 2016 | 8:25 AM

The Meadow Lake White Sox senior ‘A’ baseball team is set to begin another season in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League.

Kevin Gerwing, coach of the Sox said the team has always finished in the top four and expects this season to be no different.

“We have nine guys coming back from last year’s team so we’ll pretty much have the same look. We’re in a different division this year, playing the smaller towns around here, so a lot less traveling. We should be able to have everybody out to most games, which will help us out a lot,” he said.

After league play, teams will advance to the provincial championships. Typically, the Sox have done well having placing second in 2015 and winning the championship in 2014.

Gerwing said he is really looking forward to building off the success the team had last season.

“We had an excellent year. We had great pitching, fantastic defence throughout. Our hitting didn’t really come around till the second half but it was always there enough to give us enough runs for the win,” Gerwing said adding the team lost in the semi-finals to the Lloydminster Twins who have won the league five years in a row.

While practices have started and games begin at the end of May, Gerwing said it’s not too late if somebody wants to come and try-out.

“We want to make sure we can see them, and what they can do – make sure they’ve thrown a bit…We don’t want to put anybody in a game situation without having seen them play,” he said.

The White Sox season opens on May 25 with the home opener on May 29. The regular season runs until July 7 followed by league playoffs then the provincial championships.
