John Paul II Collegiate’s athletic director Vic Stynsky received some provincial-wide recognition recently for his dedication as a physical education teacher. He was the recipient of the 2016 Paul Renwick award, given annually for outstanding contributions in physical education.

“I’m very fortunate I have a lot of support here in my school,” the teacher of 25 years said. “I believe in physical education, I believe it’s crucial to the development of our youth. I feel strongly that keeping kids active is of the utmost importance. (My job) allows me to see kids develop as an athlete as well, so it’s quite a rewarding profession in my mind.”

The award is given by the Saskatchewan Provincial Education Association annually and is named after Paul Renwick who was a teacher at Henry Janzen school in Regina from 1982-87. He passed away in 1987 from cancer. The award comes with a print or gift worth $200, along with an honorarium worth $250 to be devoted to the enhancement of the recipient’s professional career.

“They take into account that you’re a physical education teacher, that you’ve volunteered your time doing extracurricular activities, being part of the association. Basically just giving yourself to the development of physical education in Saskatchewan,” Stynsky said.

Stynsky said the day-to-day interaction with students is his favourite part of being a P.E. Teacher and noted you get a different atmosphere when kids aren’t confined to their desks. He added he had no idea he was the winner of the award before it was announced.

His passion for physical education began when Stynsky was a kid. He was involved in many sports while growing up. He also played for the Battlefords North Stars as a teenager.

“The big thing for me is if the kids leave school knowing they’ve improved their physical fitness and enjoyed themselves in class, that’s what I look forward to. I like to have a good rapport with the students even after they’ve graduated. I see them out at the golf course or engaged in hockey,” he said. “Over the last 24 years I’ve been very fortunate.”

Stynsky is far from just the P.E. teacher at JP II however, as he coaches football, junior and senior golf, senior badminton, senior volleyball and club volleyball.
