Opportunities to help Fort McMurray flood the community

May 11, 2016 | 1:08 PM

A number of grassroots movements have sprung forth to help the 80,000 Fort McMurray evacuees, the latest being local donation collectors planning to convoy to evacuation sites.

From the children coming together to collect toys at Notre Dame Catholic school, to filling up semi-truck cabs, there is no shortage of choice when it comes to picking a cause to support and the number continues to grow.

Anita Fewing from the Hafford area made plans to fill up a 600 cubic foot trailer after she was inspired by a friend’s collection rally. She plans to drive the trailer to the North Battleford Wal-Mart parking lot tomorrow, May 12 where she will collect donations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

From there she plans to head South to make her final collection stop in Saskatoon’s Preston Crossing on Friday.

Fewing hopes to fill the truck with clothing, non-perishable food items and baby supplies.

The ‘fill up the truck’ momentum has also spread to Meadow Lake, where Stephanie Bobocel hopes to fill up her truck and trailer with donated items. It will be her second trip to haul donations up to her hometown of Lac La Biche. Bobocel will be taking donations at Partners Furniture in Meadow Lake until Saturday, May 14.

The “Children to Children” toy drive spurred in to action by Barb McNaughton’s Grade 3 class at North Battleford’s Notre Dame Catholic School is going strong. After placing collection bins in the local schools and businesses including Bridges Chevrolet, Guy’s Furniture, the Discovery Co-op, Battleford Furniture, Super A Foods and Sobeys, the amassed collection of toys and games will be personally delivered by McNaughton to the children of Fort McMurray.
