Helicopter company setting up shop south of Meadow Lake

May 13, 2016 | 12:00 PM

A Manitoba helicopter company is looking to expand into Saskatchewan with a base south of Meadow Lake, but before they can officially expand, the rural municipality needs to grant a development permit for a landing pad.

Gina Bernier, the rural municipality administrator said Provincial Air will be taking over for Darell Roney who has been in the business since 1988 and in the process of retiring.

“We have not passed (the development permit) yet. Council is going to reconvene on May 25 to further check what they’re going to do with that,” she said.

The location Provincial Air has pitched for its pad is south of the city, right beside the power station’s storage site.

“There are some residences there but Mr. Roney has been operating helicopters in the past (about 4 kilometers further south) and we haven’t heard any complaints,” Bernier said.

While Provincial Air is currently operating off Roney’s land, they are looking forward to having their own space and expanding their company.

Provincial Air offers both private and company flights and have kept busy lately by flying tree planters around.

“Sask. Environment needs their services and a lot of the northern communities need their services and no one else is here right now so it’s nice this company is coming in and setting up shop,” Bernier said. “It gives us one more company in the area.”
