UPDATE: Hold and secure lifted at Maidstone schools, suspect in custody

Jun 14, 2016 | 10:23 AM

A hold-and-secure mode put in place at two schools in Maidstone has been lifted, and police confirm a male suspect is in custody.

The security measures were put in place the morning of Tuesday June 14, after one of the schools became aware of a threat to harm the school and some students, according to Terry Craig, superintendent of schools for Northwest School Division. The hold-and-secure mode was lifted at 11:45 a.m.

Parents wanting to pick up their kids from either school were being directed to the main entrance of Ratushniak Elementary School. The school division said the school would remain open for the day, with classes resuming. Counsellors had also been brought in to provide any help that students might need.

RCMP said no charges had been laid.
