M.L. minor ball wraps up successful season

Another season has come and gone for the Meadow Lake Minor Baseball Association with two teams winning the league championship over the weekend.

The mosquito age category hosted their championship tournament June 17-19, with teams coming from Glaslyn, Edam, Turtleford and St. Walburg.

Regan Beck, president of the association and coach of the Green Sox said it was an excellent tournament and all four M.L. teams making it to the semi-finals was the biggest success of the program.

“As a coach in this age group it was very exciting to see this group improve so much in one year. It is a credit to the coaches and players for the work they put in and to the parents that committed to having their kids there all the time,” he said.

In the final, the M.L. Green Sox held off the strong M.L. Aces to win the league championship.

“We were lucky enough to get through the tourney and have a couple of our third year pitchers who were still able to pitch,” Beck said. “At the end of these long tournaments, with the tight pitch count rules, it really comes down to who has the most pitching left and thankfully that was us.”

In the midget league, the M.L. White Sox easily won the Turtle River baseball league championship in Glaslyn, SK.

Beck said the midget team kept on learning, growing and winning during the year. “It’s a real credit to the coaches and players that they only gave up one run all day. Hopefully the guys can keep the momentum going towards a solid provincial tournament.”

The midgets will look to build off the season’s success when they host provincials from July 22 to 24.
