M.L. White Sox win one of two on the road

Jun 27, 2016 | 12:00 PM

The Meadow Lake White Sox senior baseball team split a double-header winning 11-0 against the Mets then losing 9-0 to the Twins.

The games were held on Sunday, June 26 in Lloydminster.

The Sox put the ball in play early during game one with the top three batters, Davin Hildebrand, Kevin Gerwing and Shawn Irwin scoring the game’s first runs. No runs were scored in the second or third inning, however, the fourth was easily one of Meadow Lake’s best offensively. Hildebrand, Gerwing and Irwin scored their second runs of the game with Alex Vidal, Craig Weran and Sam Dawson each adding to the lead.

The heavy bats were out in the sixth inning as former NCAA Division 1 player Quincy Winkler hit his second home run of the season. Two batters later, Sam Dawson stepped up to the plate and was able to smash his second home-run of the season. The two homers bumped Meadow Lake to seven home runs on the season.

Pitching the game was Kevin Gerwing, his first appearance since the team’s season opening loss to Mervin. Gerwing went the full game and only giving up two hits in the shutout win. He improved his record to 1-1.

Unfortunately though, the Sox couldn’t carry the momentum into game two versus the Twins.

The game remained 0-0 until the third inning. After allowing eight runs, Winkler walked off the diamond and Gerwing picked up the ball to finish the game. A base-hit into the outfield made a nice RBI for the Twins as they scored the ninth run of the game, effectively defeating the Sox.

With the loss, Winkler drops to 2-4 on the season. Meadow Lake is 8-5, two games ahead of Standard Hill for first place in the Smith Division.

The Sox next game is at home on Wednesday, June 29 as they welcome the Mervin Flyers to Assman Field.
