Teen charged with 2nd-degree murder in death of baby boy

Jul 4, 2016 | 6:18 AM

A 16-year-old girl has been charged with second-degree murder after a baby boy died in Saskatoon Sunday.

Around 7 a.m. on July 3, officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Waterloo Crescent where they found the injured infant.

He was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Saskatoon police opened an investigation into the death, the city’s ninth homicide of the year, and cruisers were seen lining the streets of an area neighbours describe as quiet.

“We’re all in shock,” neighbour Danny Sather said Sunday.

Police took a 16-year-old girl, who is not related to the family, into custody later that same day.

She has been charged with second-degree murder for her alleged involvement.

At her first court appearance on July 4, the accused sat with her head down as charges were read.

In addition to the count of second-degree murder, she’s also charged with breaching two youth court orders stemming from the same date: failure to keep the peace and failure to abstain from drugs and alcohol.
