Duplex development on route to construction

Jul 7, 2016 | 5:00 PM

Construction of nine duplexes in Meadow Lake’s east end is having quite the rollercoaster ride through council.

The development came back to the table at a special council meeting held earlier today, July 7. Council rescinded the approved application only to give it the green light again moments later.

At the June 27 meeting, council approved the Third St. E. development with the condition no secondary suites will be permitted in the homes.

Due to the residential zoning bylaws, the lot sizes and construction plans meet all requirements for secondary suites. To avoid an appeal by Tupper’s Construction owner, Darcy Tupper council rescinded the condition allowing for suites.

Council could have still chosen to keep the condition, however, Diana Burton, city manager said if an appeal were to happen, it would be both costly and admitted Tupper would likely win.

Tupper said the duplexes will be pre-sold and built to the homeowner’s specifications. He added secondary suites will only be constructed if the homeowner requests one.

Construction on the units is anticipated to begin when a few sales go through. The project is expected to take two years to complete.
