Camp plans to build human foosball game

Jul 7, 2016 | 7:00 PM

A local youth camp is looking to add a unique recreation activity for its visitors.

Bethel Gospel Camp has lots for outdoor fun including canoeing, nature walks and zip lining, but it’s looking to introduce human foosball to its campers.

The camp is located at Jeanette Lake in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park. Matthew Rogers, one of the camp’s directors said each year they invest in new games and equipment for the campers.

“We have a zip line and water trampoline which is a new addition this year. Then there’s the human foosball court we want to add to our list of activities,” he said.

Human foosball is a real life version of the table game. Different set ups range from plywood boxes to blow up surfaces with bars across and people holding on while kicking a ball in attempts to score a goal.

Camp directors are looking to build the apparatus on the cheaper end. Rogers said they’re aiming to have about $1,200 to spend on it.

“Our General Director, John Gibson came up with the idea at the beginning of June and we started the fundraising shortly after that,” he said.

The camp has been fundraising strictly through crowd sourcing online while getting the word out through Facebook. The first few weeks didn’t bring much in for donations. However, On July 7 alone approximately $700 was donated. At the time of publishing, Bethel Gospel Camp has received $850 of the $1,200 goal.

Donations are being accepted until Friday, July 8. Construction will begin over the weekend and be done on time for the first round of campers on Wednesday, July 13.

Camps run for kids and teens aged six to 18. Campers come at different times depending on their age.

“There’s a variety of activities; canoeing, archery, nature walks, skills demonstrations but it’s also a bible-focused camp. Chapel sessions, campfires and singing are big things we like to do,” Rogers said.
