Goodsoil woman tells M.L. to check into the ’21st century’

Jul 26, 2016 | 7:10 AM

A Goodsoil woman criticised the city of Meadow Lake and intersections she called unsafe.

Irene Cobb submitted correspondence to council’s Monday, July 25 meeting after a recent visit to the city. In it, she said it’s been explained to her that everyone from Meadow Lake knows to slow down at uncontrolled intersections.

“However, motorists coming from other locations are unaware of the uncontrolled intersections in this city,” Cobb wrote.

She remembered an incident where she yielded at an uncontrolled intersection but the driver coming from the other direction “zoomed through without slowing down to check traffic.”

Towards the end of her letter, Cobb welcomed council to the 21st century and pointed out Meadow Lake is a city before asking for the “right thing” to be done to prevent accidents.

According to mayor Gary Vidal, roughly 20 years ago the city had yield signs in its intersections but  council at the time noticed people speeding through and elected for uncontrolled intersections forcing drivers to slow down.

Vidal said uncontrolled intersections are covered in drivers’ education courses so any one with a licence should know to yield.

“It doesn’t matter if there are signs or no signs,” he said. “If people want to speed through an intersection and not drive defensively, they will.”

He added the city will remain status quo with the intersection model in place.
