Nominations open for NWSD board trustees

Sep 6, 2016 | 12:01 PM

When voters head to the polls in the upcoming municipal election, they’ll be choosing who will lead the city or R.M. of Meadow Lake, but they will also vote for Northwest School Division board trustees.

The NWSD nomination period opens today, Sept. 6 and closes on Sept. 21 with the election on Oct. 26, the same day as the city and R.M.

Forms are available at the Meadow Lake, Turtleford and Marshall offices. Communications Officer Kaitlin Harman said forms can be printed off from the NWSD website as well.

“Most of our current board members either have children in the division or have an interest in education and want to serve their communities, be representatives and have a say in how the school division is organized,” Harman said.

Besides residing in one of the 10 districts, and completing the forms with the correct number of signatures, Harman said there isn’t much for requirements to be on the board.

She added board members can’t be staff of the NWSD before being elected as it would be a conflict of interest. If a staff member wanted to seek election, they’d have to resign from their position.

Eleven people make up the NWSD board with Meadow Lake having two representatives.

Harman said there are 10 board meetings a year members have to attend. They also have professional development days, are part of the hiring process and are key in approving and passing the budget each year.

With Election Day on Oct. 26, Harman said some of the districts hold elections while other areas acclaim someone.

The current board is made up of Mark Campbell, Terri Prete, Brian Gaboury. Kelly Ellis, Janice Baillargeon, John Anderson, Bill Cosh, Faith Graham, Doug Murray, Barb Seymour and Jessica Piche.

The NWSD includes Pierceland, Dorintosh, Goodsoil, Loon Lake, St. Walburg, Paradise Hill, Frenchman Butte, Turtleford, Livelong, Mervin, Glaslyn, Edam, Vawn, Maidstone, Waseca, Paynton, Hillmond, Marshall, Lone Rock, Flying Dust First Nation, Meadow Lake and other North West communities.

As of publishing, only Barb Seymour has said she will seek re-election.
