Rumours fly as construction crew arrives in M.L.

Rumours have started to circulate after construction equipment showed up on the north side of First Ave.

Commonly referred to as Railway Ave., residents are asking what’s happening and some have started to think the location is the new home for a Giant Tiger store. Flying Dust Band Councillor Richard Durocher said while it’s the long-term goal of the reserve to develop the land, that’s not what’s happening.

“It was expropriated by us in 1932 by the railway, and we’ve begun the process of getting it back to reserve status,” Durocher said. “The land has to be cleaned back to its original state so that’s what we’re doing now. We’re not cleaning it for any particular process, just to return it back to reserve status.”

Durocher said it’s nobody’s business who’s paying for the work.

“The people that contaminated the land and had a part in contaminating the land are paying for it,” he said.

On behalf of the Flying Dust First Nation, the government is paying for a portion of the clearing while the railway company covers the remainder.
