Mayor Gary Vidal acclaimed for another term

Sep 21, 2016 | 7:00 PM

Meadow Lake’s Gary Vidal will continue to wear the mayor’s hat for another four years as the acclaimed candidate.

The nomination deadline to run in the Oct. 26 municipal elections passed at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 21.

In Vidal’s announcement to seek re-election, he asked for others to run as well but when the deadline passed, Vidal’s name was the only one there.

“I guess in response to being acclaimed, if nobody chose to stand up and put their name forward to bring different ideas or direction, I’m going to assume that means people are satisfied with the direction we’re heading,” Vidal said.

Pleased he’ll be serving the people for the next four years, Vidal said council will do its best to carry on with its work.

“We’ll do our best to move our city to a place where people will be proud of it and where we want it to be and I’ll do my best to lead us in that direction,” he said.

Following the deadline, current councillors Merlin Seymour, Kim Chiverton, Conrad Read and Curtis Paylor will seek re-election while newcomers Tom Harrison, Richard Levesque and Glen Winkler will also vie for seats.

Vidal’s glad people will have a say in who is on council with seven people seeking six positions.

“I’m always pleased when we have good quality or a good slate of people to fill the positions,” he said. “Any of them are quality and capable people so I’m going to be pleased to work with whoever the people of Meadow Lake send to the table come Oct. 26.”

Not wanting to be being presumptuous, Vidal said he hasn’t thought much about the priorities of council for this term. He said he has some ideas but will sit down with the selected members and figure out directions as a group at the first meeting on Nov. 1.

Voters will head to the polls on Oct. 26 to select city councillors. The voting location is at the Civic Centre.
