M.L. business owner seeks re-election to city council

Oct 3, 2016 | 3:12 PM

Born and raised in the Meadow Lake area and seeking his second term as city councillor, Merlin Seymour says he has big plans for the community if re-elected on Oct. 26.

Seymour moved to Meadow Lake from a farm northwest of the city in 1990 and first became involved with municipal politics in 2012. Outside of politics, Seymour and his wife Barb own Kelly Graphics.

Over the past four years in Meadow Lake, Seymour said he is proud of seeing the paving of the West Service Rd. on Ninth Ave. along with paving of the Lift Station and hosting the 2012 Summer Games. If re-elected in the Oct. 26 municipal election, Seymour said he wants to see Meadow Lake grow more by attracting more business and housing developments.

“I would like to see more infrastructure being repaired, meaning what’s under the ground first, once the underground is done I’d love to see pavement,” Seymour said. “There’s no use setting fresh pavement down and then having to rip it up again in two or three years.”

Other priorities for Seymour include funding for the long-term care seniors facility and fostered relations with the RCMP and bylaw officer to make Meadow Lake a better and safer community to live in.

In his first term on council, Seymour said he enjoyed the comradery with his fellow councillors. He respects everyone’s ability to discuss items and reach a decision, whether everyone agrees on the topic or not.

He said the experience he gained over the term is his biggest benefit for voters looking to re-elect him.

“Being on council is a learning experience, I by no means know every bylaw in the city but if something comes up and I don’t know it, I can look it up or contact our administration team at city hall to get confirmation and clarity if there’s any discrepancies,” Seymour said.

On Oct. 26, voters head to the Civic Centre to elect six city councillors. The names on the ballot include Seymour, incumbent candidates Kim Chiverton, Curtis Paylor, Conrad Read and newcomers Tom Harrison, Glen Winkler and Richard Levesque

Mayor Gary Vidal was the acclaimed candidate following the Sept. 21 nomination deadline.
