NWSD enrollment slightly increases

Oct 13, 2016 | 5:00 PM

With a month of classes under its belt, the final enrollment numbers for September are in for the Northwest School Division (NWSD)

The month’s end numbers show an increase of two students in the division from the first week to the last week of September. Duane Hauk, Director of Education said NWSD has 4,702 students enrolled so far in the 2016-17 school year.

“The good news is that we went up from last year 19 students but I think the other good part to point out is our highest numbers are Grade 2 students and our lowest is the number of Grade 11s, so we’re trending upwards,” he said.

From the 2015-16 to 2016-17 school years, Lakeview Elementary School in Meadow Lake and Ratushniak School in Maidstone saw the highest enrollment increases, while Hillmond Central School saw the biggest decrease.

In each of the last four years, enrollment at Hillmond has dropped which Hauk credits to students choosing Lloydminster schools instead. Thirty-seven kilometres separates the two communities and more and more, parents are dropping kids off to schools on their way to work in the city.

Hauk said enrollment numbers can change again multiple times throughout the year as families move to or from the area.
