MILAN — Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris earned a bronze medal Saturday in his first major competition since breaking his leg in February.

The Regina native scored 173 points to finish third in the snowboard big air final at a freestyle World Cup.

Norway’s Marcus Kleveland took gold with 188 points while Belgium’s Seppe Smits earned silver with 178.5.

McMorris, the bronze medallist in snowboard slopestyle at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, fractured his right femur at an event in California in late February. The 22-year-old underwent surgery the next day to insert a metal rod in his femur.
