Choi sets world record and claims short-track World Cup win

KEARNS, Utah — South Korea’s Minejeong Choi won the 1,500 metres at the ISU World Cup Short Track on Saturday, a round after setting a world record.

Choi qualified for the final after finishing in a world-record 2 minutes, 14.354 seconds in her semifinal heat. She followed with a winning time of 2:44.320 in the final. Canada claimed the other spots on the podium.

Marianne St. Gelais of Saint-Felicien, Que., was second in 2:44.386, and Marie-Eve Drolet of Saguenay, Que., third in 2:45.233.

Jiyoo Kim, also of South Korea won the 1,000 final in 1:29.786, and South Korea’s Kyoungwon Lim won the men’s 1,000 in 1:22.989. Daeheon Hwang, also of South Korea, was second in 1:23.078 after setting a world record of 1:20.875 in the quarterfinal heats.
