M.L. Stampeders finish weekend series 2-0-1

Nov 21, 2016 | 11:00 AM

Not having played a game in two weeks, the Meadow Lake Stampeders were well rested this past weekend, getting at least one point in three games.

The first game, on Friday Nov. 18 had the midget AA Stamps welcome the Unity Lazers to the Meadow Lake and District Arena for the first game of the weekend. A slow paced game with few penalties and even fewer goals, the Stampeders won the contest 3-1.

Scoring the first goal of the game was Meadow Lake’s Geordie Janvier. Scored six minutes into the frame, his goal was set up by Brody Swanson and Deni Kantel and was the only one scored until the third period.

More than 30 minutes of play passed before Unity’s Lindsay Gibbons netted the tying goal three minutes into the final period.

Less than four minutes later, it was answered by Brody Swanson. His goal would stand as the eventual game winner, with Janvier adding another for insurance with eight minutes to play. Swanson again assisted on the goal as he finished with three points on the night.

The second game, on Saturday Nov. 19, had a bit more scoring than the previous game, and again, the Stampeders came away with the win, this one by the final score of 5-3 over the Saskatoon Steel.

Three minutes in, the game’s first goal was scored by Saskatoon’s Cole Beckman.

An answer took nearly 10 minutes. Scoring the tying goal was Geordie Janvier, who had two goals the night before.

With a minute left in the first, players in green and white showed off some fancy passing, forcing goaltender Robbie Hufnagel out of position. This allowed Ostin Fontaine an open net, which he made no mistake on scoring to end the period 2-1 for Meadow Lake.

In the second period, Kaleb Bull scored his second goal of the season, pulling the Stamps ahead 3-1, a score which would stand until the third period.

Early in the final frame, Justynn Noltcho-Clarke scored off a pass from Spencer Morningchild just 45 seconds in.

Saskatoon mounted a late comeback attempt and was able to score two goals off shots from Jaxon Penner and Kristopher Prosofsky to cut the lead to one.

With less than a minute to play and the score 4-3, Noltcho-Clarke netted his second of the period, and game, ending it with a final score of 5-3.

The third and final game of the weekend for the Stampeders, on Sunday Nov. 20, had the team welcome the Martensville Marauders. A mixture of fatigue and penalties worked against the Stamps as the boys fell 4-3 in overtime.

By the end of the first, Meadow Lake was down 2-0 off goals from Conor Prosofsky and Parker Atkinson.

The Stamps battled back in the second, able to tie it and go into the third with a 2-2 score thanks to goals from Easton Neufeldt and Justyn Noltcho-Clarke.

In the third period, both teams scored once, forcing overtime. For Saskatoon, the goal scorer was again Parker Atkinson, while Meadow Lake’s goal was scored by Brody Swanson.

Meadow Lake fell with an unassisted goal by Nathanial Mock.

With the 2-0-1 weekend, Meadow Lake improved to 3-6-1-1 on the season, tenth place out of 15 teams.

The team’s next games in the Centre Four Hockey League are scheduled for Nov. 25 and Nov. 26 at the Meadow Lake and District Arena and Pineride Ford Arena on the Flying Dust First Nation respectively.
