M.L. Broncos take game one in playoff series vs. Big River

Feb 21, 2017 | 1:00 PM

The Meadow Lake Broncos are one win closer to capturing back-to-back league championships.

Round two in the Beaver Lakes Hockey League playoffs saw the Broncos matched up against the Big River Braves in a best-of-five series.

The Broncos received a first round bye and hadn’t played a league game since January, but the time off didn’t seem to bother Meadow Lake. The Broncos continued their dominance and pounded the Braves 7-4 on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Meadow Lake only trailed once during the game. Big River’s Evan Dorian scored just 23 seconds into the opening frame. It took over 16 minutes for the Broncos to respond, with the tying goal going to Kahisis Derocher.

Before the first period ended, Jordan Oystrick put the Broncos ahead 2-1.

In the second, the Braves kept playing catch-up as the two teams traded goals throughout. By the time the buzzer sounded after 40 minutes of play the Broncos were up 4-3 thanks to goals from Ashton McIntyre and Brody Brooks.

Meadow Lake added three more in the third period to seal the deal and take the game 7-4.

Game two will be held in Big River Friday, Feb. 24. Game three is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 on Flying Dust First Nation.

If necessary, games four and five will be scheduled for next weekend.
