Meadow Lake’s King traded to Habs

Mar 1, 2017 | 11:55 AM

Meadow Lake native Dwight King is coming back to Canada, after the Los Angeles Kings traded the 27-year-old to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday morning.

In exchange, the Kings receive a fourth-round pick from Montreal.

“[I’m] excited…to play in a big Canadian market. I know it will be a change but their team is sitting pretty well in the standings right now,” King told TSN in a phone interview. “I would have liked to stick around but I’m excited about the new challenge.”

The 6’4”, 229 lb. forward has eight goals and seven assists this season in 63 games. He compiled 13 points in 47 games last season.

King won two Stanley Cups with the Kings, first in 2011-12 and then in 2013-14.

He played his bantam years in the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey system before playing for the Beardy’s Blackhawks of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League in 2004-05. From there, he played four full seasons in the Western Hockey League for the Lethbridge Hurricanes and was a fourth round pick of Los Angeles in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

King has a cap hit of $1.95 million this season and no salary was retained in the deal. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
