Increase in vehicle thefts a concern in M.L.

Mar 28, 2017 | 12:00 PM

It has been a disturbing trend in the Meadow Lake area and RCMP are putting the public on notice that vehicle thefts are on the rise in the area.

Following a week which saw the detachment handle 142 files, Sgt. Ryan How said a substantial amount are stolen vehicle cases.

“There has been an increase in stolen vehicles recently in the area,” How said. “We cannot stress enough the importance of not leaving your keys unattended in your vehicle or making sure your spare set of keys are not easily accessible.”

How added that most newer vehicles are almost impossible to start without a key so allowing easy access to a second set of keys is an opportunity for thieves.

“Once a vehicle is stolen they are generally used to commit other crimes,” How said. “Many times the suspects are not experienced drivers and they operate the vehicles at high speeds which creates a high risk scenario for police and the public.”

How also pointed out that a large portion of their week was believed to be the action of two female suspects involved in substantial property crimes in the area.

The pair is believed to be responsible for several stolen vehicles, plus break and enters into residences.

On March 26 the RCMP executed a search warrant on an apartment and recovered stolen property. Later that day with the assistance of Green Lake RCMP a stolen vehicle was recovered with more stolen property inside.

As part of the investigation the RCMP are searching for 24-year-old Tatum Reimer who has a warrant for other unrelated charges.
