Northwest Trade Fair committee looks forward to busy weekend

Apr 28, 2017 | 4:55 PM

A wide range of exhibitors, mini donuts and spudnuts are just a few examples of what can be enjoyed this coming weekend at the Northwest Trade Fair at the Meadow Lake Arena.

This year, the annual event runs April 28 to 30, and over 40 organizations and vendors from the area and even across Canada will be taking part. The event will also include a variety of musical entertainment and interactive displays. The event has served as a fundraiser for the Meadow Lake Curling Club for the last 26 years.

“There will be a passport clinic,” noted Shannon Heddon, Trade Fair Steering Committee member. “The staff from MP Georgina Jollibois office will be on hand to help and people can get their pictures taken tomorrow, too.”

Fellow steering committee member Lee Brown said that there are a good mix of returning participants as well as some new ones. “We have a few new ones like Leather Better from Toronto, City Convenience from here in Meadow Lake, a stone cutter, a construction company and a few more,” she said. “We also have lots of returning ones – Artistic Incidents, Saskatchewan Trappers, and the Copper Kettle Fudge Company have been coming for as long as I remember. We look forward to people coming out, it’s a great fundraiser for the curling club.”

Kristie Eklund of Earth’s Emporium in Edmonton said she is excited to experience her first-ever Northwest Trade Fair. She and her partner run Earth’s Imports, an endeavour that helps to trade fairly from small-scale craft producers in developing countries.

“Always excited to come to new communities,” she said while setting up her booth. “We’re happy to represent the group of Indigenous artists – we work with a group of about 100 Mayan ladies in Guatemala who rely on their craft. Their handiwork is astonishing. We help market their great products to the rest of the world so they can have a sustainable income. We’re always looking for more wholesalers so we can help even more women – it’s just my partner and I doing it for the last eight years or so.”

The Northwest Trade Fair runs 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
