UPDATE: Loon Lake police take one into custody after report of man with firearm

May 12, 2017 | 1:01 PM

A home on a First Nation west of Meadow Lake was surrounded by RCMP Friday morning after reports of a man with a firearm entering the residence.

Residents of the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation are being asked to avoid the area as officers secure the scene.

Police said they received a call shortly before 9 a.m. indicating the man had a firearm when he entered the home, and the situation is still active.

Loon Lake RCMP said in a news release both Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation School and Ernie Studer School enacted their hold and secure procedures because of how close they were to the home.

A police update at 4:30 p.m. said arrangements were made to allow students to leave the schools safely.

Police added it’s unknown how many people are in the home, but an investigation is continuing.

Several RCMP members remain on scene, and the Mounties are asking the public not to announce where officers are stationed around the home.

A police update at 10 p.m. said one man was taken into custody.

The investigation is on-going with people asked to continue to respect police barriers until they’ve been removed.
