Despite rain, good turnout at Stampede Parade

Jun 6, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Despite the rain last evening, several local businesses and organizations brightened up the streets of Meadow Lake with their floats as part of the 97th annual Stampede Parade.

Hundreds of Meadow Lakers lined the parade route, ready to take in the fanfare and treats associated with the occasion. The Meadow Lake Co-op, 4-H Club, SheDevils rugby team, Tolko Industries, the Parkland Hotel and Mistik Management were some of the participants.

Erin Gorst of the Meadow Lake Stampede Association was in charge of the event, and said there were around 50 floats participating.

“Whether that was cars or people walking, we had around that mark,” she said. “It was a nice big one. My judges were Tammy Mutch and Debbie Robertson, and Cpl. Rielly Knock was the marshall.”

She said despite the weather, the attendance for the event was fantastic.

“There were only around four floats that cancelled,” she said. “We even had some people show up that weren’t registered. It was an excellent turnout.”

Prizes were handed out in several categories to floats that most exemplified this year’s theme, Canada 150.

The overall best dressed for the theme went to Transition Place Educational Centre, while the best dressed automobile went to Solitude Trophy/Alcott Embroidery. Flying Dust won the honour for best youth organization, and the best overall adult float was awarded to Multiworks. The top business spot was given to A&W.

Stampede Week runs until June 10.
