Pony chuckwagon and chariot races light up Meadow Lake

Jun 21, 2017 | 3:13 PM

The North West Saskatchewan Pony Chuckwagon and Chariot Racing Association (NWSPCCA) had a busy three days of races this past weekend, with lots of action for those in attendance to take in.

Despite the rainy weather deterring some participants, Gordie Vandale, one of the organizers of the event, as well a member and competitor in the NWSPCCA, said it was a bustling weekend of racing.

“We still had people come from all over the north part of the province,” he said. “Meadow Lake, Onion Lake, Saddle Lake, Carrot River, Waterhen. We would have had people from further away, from Manitoba and the like, but they didn’t make the trip because they heard it was muddy in the area. Here in Meadow Lake we run no matter what [the weather is], it’s a great track here.”

In these racing events, the competitors compete against the clock, and are ranked in order of highest to lowest for the whole weekend. The top three competitors for the whole weekend then qualify for the Dash for Cash, in which the winner of that final draw takes home a trophy and cash prize for their performance.

Norm Sinclair of Nipawin won the title for the chuckwagons, and Kolton Lindsay of Duck Lake won for the chariots.

At the end of the season, the top five racers overall are recognized.

The club returned to racing in Meadow Lake last year after a four-year hiatus, and Vandale said this year’s event was a success thanks those who came out and the various sponsors.

The next scheduled event for the NWSPCCA is in Onion Lake from June 29 to July 2. Schedule updates and scores are viewable on the club’s Facebook page.
