Carpenter High honours students with awards day

Jun 22, 2017 | 1:08 PM

Students at Carpenter High were recognized today for their efforts in academics, athletics and their contribution to extracurricular activities and the overall community.

A wide variety of awards for top averages, most improved, dedication, community service and volunteerism, and spirit were given out.

Principal Larry Waterman said that it’s a special day for the school and recognizes students for their efforts.

“It really cuts a wide swath of through our student body,” he said. “We get a chance to say thank you to the people who run our breakfast program for instance, or they work in our library. Those people help our school run so it’s good to recognize them. We had a chance to celebrate the success of our students, not just athletically and in their activities, but also academically.”

He said that high school is a time when students really begin to evolve so the awards day is one way the staff tries to give a nod to the work students do every day.

“We know that there’s real chances for growth for students,” he said. “We want to recognize them and encourage them to continue to improve. We think that’s it’s a real process they’re going through, they’re evolving as they get older. We recognize too that some kids that may not have the 92 or 94 average still are showing a lot of grit and character by being in other activities or having perfect attendance. There are lots of ways to be successful and we want to show that in our awards program.”

Alexa McKee is a Grade 12 student who took six awards, for her efforts in band, soccer, and several school subjects.

She said she has truly enjoyed being a part of CHS and the community of Meadow Lake.

“I’ve loved being involved in this school,” she said.  “I had a lot of fun in class and all the extra cirricular stuff, why not when you have the chance? It’s nice that it’s small school, everyone’s pretty close and gets along pretty well.”

She said she was proud of her fellow students for their achievements.

“There are so many people that went up there and I am so glad to see them get this recognition, said McKee.

“I see how hard some of these people are working and I think it’s great to see everyone get recognized.”
