Local musicians excited for Jam in the Park

Jul 17, 2017 | 5:00 PM

This coming Wednesday, Meadow Lake’s musically inclined are welcome to share their harmonies at a jam night at the Pineridge Ford amphitheatre in Lion’s Park.

As a part of the ‘Experience Meadow Lake – Let’s Play’ initiative, the city’s parks and recreation board have organized two of these evenings, where local musicians can come and perform with each other in an open stage and collaborative way. The first of these nights is this Wednesday, July 19 starting at 7 p.m., with the second scheduled for August 23. The public is also encouraged to come and watch the musical magic unfold.

Meadow Lake musician Lee Bell was sharing the event on his personal Facebook page, encouraging others from the region to take part both as artists and as spectators. He think these types of events are encouraging to see in Meadow Lake.

“I think it’s great the city is supporting these jams,” he said. “I’m excited because it’s being put on earlier in the evening on a weekday. As a working musician, I miss most community events because I’m out entertaining other communities on the weekends. I’m also excited I can bring my seven-year-old son he can experience the joy of live music and he see how the musicians work together.”

Bell said that he thinks these types of events are important for communities, as it allows them to come together in a holistic and collaborative way.

“Music is a great way to bond people together,” he said. “Getting up onstage and performing in front of friends, family, and strangers is an exciting experience. Jam sessions give anybody the chance to experience that.”

He said he hopes many people come out to enjoy this week’s inaugural event and future sessions.

“I hope to see a heightened interest in live music,” said Bell. “If people know there’s a stage to perform on it might give them the incentive to pick up that ol’ guitar, bass, piano, drum, etc. and learn a few tunes.  I encourage everybody to come out and support live music. A city with art and music is a vibrant city.”

The Jam In the Park events are sponsored by the Meadow Lake Lions Club, and are free to both watch and participate in. Anyone wanting to take part can contact Marty Bishop at (306) 236-9334.
