Radford wins PBR Classic

Jul 27, 2017 | 12:00 PM

It was quite the night for DeWinton, Alberta’s Brock Radford on Wednesday night at the fourth annual Professional Bull Rider (PBR) Classic at the Civic Centre in North Battleford.

His first round score of 85.5 points was good enough to earn him his second PBR Canada Touring Pro Division win of 2017.

Radford didn’t just win though; the 22-year-old rode a whopping five bulls that night.

“You’re getting on five in one night so staying healthy is a big part,” Radford said following the win. “You see some guys here that only get on one and they get hurt. Probably the biggest thing in this game is just stay healthy. If you can stay healthy, you can keep getting on.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

By the end of the night, Radford jumped six spots in the PBR Canada national standings, from 11th to fifth, after earning 275 Canadian points. He also earned 60 world points and $3,292.48.

“There’s a lot of points up for grabs and when guys don’t show up, it gives us an opportunity to take their bulls,” Radford said. “It’s basically just doubling down, like you’re playing cards or something. You give yourself a better chance of winning.”

While Radford jumped six spots in the national standings, there is also a new number one.

Meadow Lake’s Cody Coverchuk finished in fourth on Wednesday night, thanks to an 83-point performance aboard Painted Prize in round one. The 23-year-old received 110 Canadian points, which was enough to jump Jordan Hansen for the top spot. Coverchuk leads Hansen by 31.67 points and has a 393.34 point-lead over fifth-place Radford.

Coverchuk also received 15 world points and took home $1,079.50.

Finishing in second at the PBR Classic was Camrose, Alberta’s Coy Robbins, after he received 84.5 points in round one, earning him 30 world points and $2,374.91.

The third-place finisher was Tisdale, Saskatchewan’s Justin Lloyd, who was the only rider to log a qualified ride in the championship round. Thanks to his 84-point performance aboard Booster Juice in that final round, Lloyd received 125 Canadian points, 20 world points, and $2,752.74. The 29-year-old is now ranked third in the PBR Canada national standings, trailing Coverchuk by 287.5 points.

There’s still plenty of points to be had on the Canada Touring Pro Division and in the world standings.

For Radford, there’s no rest in the coming days. He is in Medicine Hat for a competition today, then he’ll head South to Big Sky, Mont. for a two-day, $40,000 PBR. Next week he is in High Prairie, Alta. on Tuesday, Kelowna, B.C. on Wednesday, Camrose, Alta. on Friday, and Strathmore, Alta. on Saturday.

Although it was Radford’s first time in North Battleford on Wednesday, he did make it clear how much he enjoyed himself.

“These short round bulls are the best you’ll see in the world,” Radford said. “They don’t cheap out with the bulls here. North Battleford gets to see bulls that will be at world finals, bulls that are in the four round at Calgary and the short round at Calgary, and that you see guys win on all year.”
