M.L. White Sox reach finals at Baseball Sask. provincials

Meadow Lake’s White Sox have wrapped up another year of baseball, and capped things off with a strong showing at the Baseball Saskatchewan provincials this past weekend.

The tournament, which started Friday, Aug. 11 and concluded Sunday, Aug. 13, saw the Sox meet up with squads from across the province.

The team ended up facing host team Standard Hill in the final, and lost the game 20-3. Co-manager Craig Weran said the weekend was a positive one overall.

“We made it to the final, and were disappointed to have lost it once we worked so hard to get there,” he said. “But overall, it was a positive weekend being a relatively young team.”

He said the Sox were doing fairly well in the final up until the last couple innings of the game.

“They scored a lot of runs late in the game,” he said. “We were in it for the first four or five innings or so. They were a good team – good hitting team, good defensively, had good young pitching. We just got beat by a better team on the day.”

Throughout the course of the tournament, the Sox met with Kenosee on Friday at noon and took top spot in that match up with a score of 5-4. On Saturday morning they saw the Arcola team and dominated the game with a final score of 16-6.

“We really hit the ball well our bats really came alive Friday and Saturday,” Weran said.

The squad lost their next match up against Langenburg, but due to the scores from some of the other games in the tournament, they had a spot secured in Sunday’s semi-final matchup. The Sox lost against Langenburg 10-0 but Weran said it was a good game to have some rookie players take to the pitcher’s mound.

“We knew we were advancing to the semi-final, so it gave us a little bit of flexibility for our third game,’ he said. “We got a couple young midget kids pitching for us, got them some valuable experience in a game that wasn’t going to influence positively or negatively. We recognize the importance of these young guys having an opportunity to have these experiences at provincials so that this team can grow and develop in the next two, three, five years.”

On Sunday, the Sox met up with Kenosee again, and won that game with a score of 8-3 which qualified them for the final.

Weran said the team is thankful for the support from both their main sponsor MillTown Sports Bar and the fans in Meadow Lake that cheered them on all season long.

“Nice that the tournament was relatively close by, so we were able to have a few fans make the trip down, it was good to have some support,” he said.
