Passenger service starting in Meadow Lake

Aug 28, 2017 | 11:45 AM

Since the Saskatchewan Transportation Company officially shuttered in May of this year, people all over the province have been trying to find alternate ways to travel. A Regina-based company is starting service to and from Meadow Lake to Saskatoon starting tomorrow, Aug. 29.

Rider Express began its passenger service earlier this summer between Regina and Saskatoon. The company has a small fleet of 15-passenger Ford Transit 300 vans driving routes across the province.

Firat Uray is the manager of the company, and he said the demand for service in the Meadow Lake region has increased over the summer.

“We are trying to extend our service as much as we can,” he said. “We are getting more calls from Meadow Lake and North Battleford. This is the requests from passengers from there calling us.”

He said the company has received five or more calls per week from people in the Meadow Lake area. Uray felt his company can fill a void.

“It is important for us and people who live in the region,” Uray said. “Those people who have doctors and medical appointments – those people need the service.”

It’s been over two months since the routes from Regina to Saskatoon began, and a month for the Saskatoon to Prince Albert route. Rider Express has tried to spread the word about their service since starting in early July.

The drop-off and pick up points originate and end at Tim Hortons stores in the various communities. The inaugural Meadow Lake departure takes off from the Tim Hortons at 712 Ninth St. W. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 8 a.m. and is $48 one-way. The service will run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and can take a maximum of 14 passengers per trip.
