Sep 15, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Among several topics at their September meeting, the school board and superintendents of the Northwest School Division (NWSD) discussed enrolments, which are slightly up for the 2017-2018 school year.

Duane Hauk, Director of Education with NWSD said overall in the division there’s approximately 30 more students.

“We’re just over 4,700 students right now,” he said. “It’s up across the division – everybody fluctuates, some might be up some might be down, but that’s across 24 schools. We’ve been holding steady for the last number of years, but we’re starting to climb a few students.”

Reading levels on the rise, work still needed on writing and math

The senior administration spoke about their updated goals for the school year which analyzed reading, writing and mathematics benchmarks.

“Our reading data is showing that we’re actually a little bit ahead of what we had projected,” he said. “We have a little bit of work ahead of us in writing and math, our schools have identified and are working towards that,” said Hauk.

Athletics and technology presentations highlight school strengths

Jay Elder, president of the Northwest High School Athletics Association, spoke to the board and senior administration about a breakdown of how the last school year went, and the success stories of the schools and student athletes, and the high number of students, teachers and local volunteers who participate in extracurricular activities in NWSD.

Elder also spoke of some upcoming sports highlights for the year as well.

“Carpenter High School will be hosting the 5A boys’ provincial volleyball championship this fall,” said Hauk.

Todd Forbes, technology supervisor spoke about the needs that NWSD have when it comes to technology, with things like bandwith.

“We want to students to be able to be online an access information easily,” said Hauk.

Board searching for trustee for Subdivision 3

After the August board meeting, the board advertised former chair Brian Gaboury’s vacant position for Subdivision 3, which includes St. Walburg, Frenchman Butte and Paradise Hill. There were no candidates, so there is a second call for nominations, open from Sept. 12 to 26.
