M.L.’s May Gorst heading to horse relay race finals

Sep 22, 2017 | 10:03 AM

Meadow Lake’s May Gorst is taking on a new form of horse-riding and being no stranger to working with horses, is heading off to compete in the Whoop Up Downs finals after earning first-place finishes last month.

Gorst has a long history of chuckwagon racing in her family and was the first female outrider in the country.

She is new to the specific variation of horseback riding after joining the Canadian Indian Relay Racing Association. The style involves four people, which includes a jockey who rides three horses in the race, two-horse holders and a ‘mugger’ who controls the horses if they run away. The race requires the horses be owned by an Indigenous person and competitors must wear traditional regalia.

This summer, Gorst competed with Garth Esperance, Chris Wells, Basil Mosquito and Warren Pewap in Cold Lake and Saddle Lake. She competed in the ladies division and won first place in twon competitions, qualifying her for the Whoop Up Downs in Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
