UPDATE: One man dead after officer-involved shooting in North Battleford Saturday night

Oct 22, 2017 | 8:24 AM

One man is dead and a female is in custody in North Battleford following an officer-involved shooting Saturday night.

At a press conference in Regina this morning, police said members of the Battlefords RCMP responded to a call of a male who reported being chased by a vehicle and shot at by the occupants.

Police said they located the vehicle and a brief pursuit ensued. It ended after the suspect vehicle rammed a police vehicle and became immobilized near the intersection of 15th Ave. and 105 Street.

In response, witnesses say a verbal altercation between RCMP and the driver began. Witnesses say they heard police yell the driver was reaching for something and that is when one member shot their firearm and injured an occupant of the vehicle.

The police performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. However, on route to the hospital, the driver, Brydon Bryce Whitstone, 22, from Onion Lake, died.

A second suspect, an adult female who was also in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. She was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in custody.

One RCMP member also sustained minor injuries. They were taken to hospital, treated and released.

Saskatchewan RCMP has requested an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The Regina Police Service will be conducting this investigation. Additionally, the RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.

The initial complaint of a male being chased and shot at continues to be investigated by the RCMP. Traffic remains restricted in the area.  Police say the scene is secure and there is no risk to public safety.
