M.L. Broncos trounce Onion Lake in home opener

Oct 30, 2017 | 12:00 PM

It’s been a few months since reigning champs of the Beaver Lake Hockey League hit the ice as a team, but they started off the 2017-2018 with an impressive 6-2 win against the Onion Lake Border Chiefs on Saturday.

The Meadow Lake Broncos had a strong start to the game, scoring four goals in the first period thanks a single from Colby Stanley and a hat trick from Ashton McIntyre. The second period saw another goal from McIntyre and Dustin Gorst punctuated the night with another late in period.

Team Captain and centre Taylor Arnold said for the team’s first game of the year, the squad was overall happy with the results of the matchup.

“We have six to eight new players that played that day,” he said. “To have that many new ones, sometimes the chemistry isn’t there, but for the most part everybody played really good. There’s small details that can be addressed, but everybody was pretty happy with it.”

He said the overall highlight was the team’s ability to communicate and stick to the game plans set out by teammates and coaches alike.

“We have four lines, and try to play a pretty physical game,” Arnold said. “If you get away from that plan or get too many penalties, then that can change the way you want to play. For the most part we just play whistle to whistle and carry on after that.”

He said the team is looking forward getting back to practice this week and for their next game, this coming Saturday Nov. 4 against the Saulteaux 3 Stars at 8:30 p.m.
