UPDATE: Hold and secure ended at ML schools; male arrested

Nov 2, 2017 | 11:37 AM

UPDATE: In a media release this afternoon, Meadow Lake RCMP confirmed that a male youth was allegedly brandishing a knife and uttering threats against Gateway Elementary School in Meadow Lake this morning at approximately 10 a.m.

RCMP members attended the scene immediately. The male was located and arrested without incident at around 11:30 a.m. The hold and secure at the schools ended shortly after the arrest.

No staff or students were physically injured during the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

The suspect, 14, cannot be named due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault, and uttering threats.

While there’s no immediate threat to students and staff, Meadow Lake RCMP have advised all schools in the City of Meadow Lake to enter a hold and secure procedure. This was enacted at roughly 11 a.m. this morning.

Kaitlin Harman, the communications officer with Northwest School Division, said classes are proceeding as usual, but all exterior doors at the schools are locked.

“No one is allowed to enter or leave the buildings, and we will remain in this status until we’re advised by the RCMP to lift that. Most times when this happens, the RCMP advise us to do that and it could be related to police activity in the community where they’re investigating something and want to keep people, especially students inside and away from whatever is going on.”

Harman added this is not the same as a lockdown procedure, which is when there is an incident in or adjacent to a school.
