Project Poinsettia spreads holiday cheer in Meadow Lake

Dec 8, 2017 | 1:00 PM

A little red flower brought big smiles to some Meadow Lake residents today, thanks to Project Poinsettia.

The communtiy initiative started at CJNS’s sister station, Q98 in North Battleford four years ago. The project expanded to Meadow Lake three years ago, and now poinsettias are delivered to all hospitals and long term care homes in the North region of the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

Over 85 poinsettias were delivered to the Northwest Health Facility and the Northland Pioneers Lodge, and another 40 were brought to Loon Lake and Goodsoil by volunteers and radio station staff.

Lodge resident Arlene Schuler said it was ‘awesome’ to receive the flowers.

“Everybody loves when people bring flowers over Christmas,” she said. “It is very nice.”

Jackie Albers, an activities worker at the lodge, said it is heartwarming when the community reaches out to the residents at the facility.

“They all seem very pleased,” she said. “You see their faces light up, and small gestures mean a lot to them. A lot of times it’s not just the material, it’s the fact that someone is coming in to spend the time with them, and it means the world to them.”

Over 1,000 poinsettias are expected to be delivered across the northwest as a part of this annual project.
