Broncos lose close game against Sandy Lake

Dec 9, 2017 | 2:36 PM

Despite a hard-fought effort, the Meadow Lake Sr. Broncos couldn’t come out on top during Friday night’s home game against the Sandy Lake Chiefs.

In the Broncos first meeting with this squad this season, the Chiefs pulled ahead in the third period during a five-on-three penalty opportunity, ultimately taking the 2-1 victory. The shots on goal, however, showed the Broncos were unquestionably fighting to pull ahead, as the final tally was 50-27.

Broncos head coach Winston Morin said the team put in a strong effort.

“I thought we outplayed them,” he said. “We were having problems solving their goaltending… we threw lots of shots at him and couldn’t beat him. One thing leads to another and time runs out on you.

“They did everything right, just couldn’t get the puck in the net.”

Veteran player Dustin Gorst said even though the Broncos lost this matchup, the team battled hard.

“We’ll work at practice week and get back at ‘er,” he said. “We just didn’t have enough high-quality chances to score tonight. I’ll give [the Chiefs] credit, their back end is really strong and the goalie played well.”

The Broncos, according to Morin, are looking forward to some more competitive play and believes the team is gelling well as a unit.  More so as the team recently acquired DJ King, who has played in the National and American Hockey Leagues.

“He’ll be a big cog in our future,” he said. “He’s played some pretty good hockey in his days. Overall, the season’s going well. There are five teams left and they’re all this competitive, so it’s going to be really good games here on in.”

The league has been widdled down to five organizations as the Muskeg Lake Blades and the Saulteaux Three Stars have folded. Each was struggling to maintain sufficient rosters.

The Broncos will next face the Whitefish Flyers Friday, Dec. 15, and host Sandy Bay again the following night.
